roadtrip!

we headed south to visit some family last weekend. as we covered the miles, we left behind the latest snowfall, to brown grass and empty trees, until finally the green began! and flowers! and leaves! so lovely, food for the wintered soul.

Here we are on the road....

... and puppy snorfling the flowers she's about to pee on....

...And puppy in repose.

Now we're back up north, and the brown of my yard and flower beds is calling for attention. today I'll head out with rake and clippers and clean things up as well I can. My crocuses are up! small buds are peeking out! an exciting time.

ooo, and I've decided to make a septic system for my pup's poo. there are systems you can buy, and there are do-it-yourself systems that I think I'm going to try. It involves a garbage can with the bottom removed, septic enzymes and digging a big hole. yay digging!

and I recently heard a phrase that I love for gardener geeks: Dirt Manicure.

Hi there! Another road trip? What fun! We are getting ready to take Duncan on his first road trip since I rescued him 3.5 yrs ago. Only this one will be twice as long plus. I am pretty worried about it, but I will take his records and his percorten.. I give it myself ( you do too right?) and all sorts of preds. How much do you increase preds for a trip if at all?

We will stay in a hotel. I am renting a van.. and will take the bed he has been sleeping in for the last year. It is an inexpensive one from Costco. I figure that If I put that in the van and use rescue remedy, which does help him, and or rescue sleep remedy that we will do fine. He has been very healthy for a long time. He weathered a visit from my grand dog at christmas very well. A new kitten was not trouble. The trip is scary, but I won't ever kennel him and my whole family is making the trip so? La Quint is dog friendly and we have a suite reserved on the second floor.. no smoking.. and during my daughters wedding reception he will be at her house with his friend Steve, ( my grand dog) .

Her wedding is a destination wedding, just for her and Tom. That is next saturday in St Lucia.

Do you have any travel tips for me?

Hi Kathy - yes, trips can be stressful for Maia, so I give her 5 mgs of pred. Since she doesn't have daily pred, it keeps her healthy. I try to err on the side of a little too much, instead of not enough. Usually on the way back, she doesn't need as much, so I give her just 2.5 mg.

Her appetite isn't very good on trips, so I make sure I have something she can't resist - raw burger meat! She doesn't eat much, but it helps her to feel good enough to keep drinking. That's key for her - staying hydrated to keep her electrolytes balanced.

Having a bed in the car is also a great idea. Maia used to stand the entire way, wherever we were going! The bed encourages her to lay down and watch the world go by, and she arrives a little more rested.

Traveling can be a challenge, I agree. Sounds like you have your bases covered, though! have a great trip!
